One of the most popular free plugins for After Effects in the early days was unmult by Knoll Light Factory. This was a utility plugin that was used to key out black background and generate a clean alpha channel that work great for lens flares, explosions, and smoke clips that were shot or created on a black solid. Build up your post production library with the the best free plugins and filters for AE! Take your After. The plugin will show up in “Effect – Knoll – Unmult” or you can just type it in the Effects Panel, then all you need to do is drag it on the footage. Unmult is very useful and efficient for smoke layers (i’m using a blue background so you can see the keyed layer), flares, fire and water drops layers. A lightweight After Effects plug-in that is able to create alpha channels from any image or videos shot against a black background
Knoll Unmult is an easy-to-use Adobe After Effects plug-in that will help you create mattes generated from an image or video recorded on a black background.
To put it simply, Knoll Unmult allows you to make an alpha channel from any video shot with a black background and can generate alpha channels for flares rendered on black backdrops as well.
It is worth noting that this plug-in is designed for Adobe After Effects CS3, CS4 and CS5. It will not work with the latest versions of the animation and creative compositing application. Also, it appears to have been discontinued, so it is unlikely that a newer, compatible edition will be released.
Knoll Unmult is installed just like any other Adobe After Effects plug-in and will be accessible from the effects control panel. All you need to do is find it in the list of available tools and select it after the media you are working with has been prepared accordingly.
The After Effects plug-in then generates an alpha channel based on luminance, converting the black matte into transparency. It is especially useful for situations when you need to create alpha channels for flares rendered on black or videos that are recorded in an appropriate manner.
Knoll Unmult can be put to good use when working on a large number of projects and gives filmmakers a simple method of creating alpha channels. It can replace the black background your video is recorded on with a transparency layer and also adjusts the images to compensate for the newly created alpha channel.
